St Marys Cathedral

Client: Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney
Location: Sydney, NSW
Services: Fire Engineering

CORE developed the development-application fire suppression strategy for St Mary's Cathedral, one of Sydney's most significant heritage buildings.

Introducing modern hydrant and booster coverage to a nineteenth-century sandstone cathedral demands a light touch — services have to reach where they are needed without disturbing the fabric or the character of the place.

CORE set out heritage-sensitive routing for the fire suppression infrastructure, a clear hydrant and booster layout, and the mark-ups needed to support the development application — giving the design team and approval authorities a workable, sympathetic path to improving the cathedral's fire protection.

The strategy shows how contemporary fire safety can be introduced to a heritage landmark discreetly, meeting the requirements while respecting what makes the building irreplaceable.
